Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate

The gift of education (13/12/2010)

Education is vital to children’s well-being. In the Kpone district near Tema, Ghana, not far from Cargill’s ultramodern cocoa processing plant, the Presbyterian and Methodist elementary schools are an invaluable community resource.

Yet these schools badly need new teaching materials. Children do not have enough places to sit down. The teachers’ rooms are empty: the teachers cannot sit to prepare classes or correct homework. Blackboards are almost worn through. Basic materials such as notebooks are in short supply.

This Christmas, instead of cards or gifts, Cargill is giving back to the Kpone community with a much-needed donation to the two schools. It will supply furniture and necessities, including:

  • 15 tables, 90 chairs, educational materials and toys for the smallest pupils
  • 100 tables and chairs for the primary and junior high school students
  • 25 whiteboards plus markers
  • 13 desks and chairs for the teachers’ room
  • carpentry and finishing of rooms

The Cargill team in Ghana is already arranging for the new supplies so the children can go to school in a cheerful and stimulating environment.

We wish the children and teachers of Kpone a merry Christmas and a bright future!
