New: coatings & fillings with sustainable palm oil (22/02/2012)

At our Center of Expertise for Coatings & Fillings in Deventer, we can now offer our customers coatings & fillings containing RSPO certified mass balance palm and palm kernel products. These ingredients have been sourced according to the RSPO criteria for sustainable palm oil production.

Along with the Cargill Sustainable Cocoa Program, which drives production of certified cocoa beans, this represents another step in our ambition to bring sustainable products to the market.

Palm (including palm kernel) is the world's most widely used vegetable oil. Growing demand and expansion of plantations has raised concerns around palm cultivation, both from a social and an environmental point of view.

To support sustainable plantation management practices, the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004. Cargill has been an active member since the beginning of this multi-stakeholder group, which works to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm products through global standards. Amongst its principles are respect for the rights of landowners, farm workers, smallholders and their families, and no primary forests sacrificed for new palm oil plantations. Today around 5.6 million mt of palm oil is RSPO certified, equalling 11% of global demand.

By 2015, Cargill's goal is to supply European customers with palm oil products that are 100% RSPO certified and/or originated from smallholder growers (excluding palm kernel oil products).

In close cooperation with Cargill Refined Oils Europe, Deventer has passed the RSPO supply chain audit and received the RSPO supply chain certificate. These developments allow us to work with customers to realize their own sustainability ambitions.
