World's largest chocolate bar unveiled (22/02/2012)

In October, after months of top-secret confectionery planning and construction, the well-known British chocolatiers Thorntons unveiled the world's largest chocolate bar. Tipping the scales at 5,792.5 kg, the tablet was made from a special recipe milk chocolate, supplied by Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate from its Worksop, UK, plant.

Created to mark the company's 100th birthday, the bar contained the equivalent of over 72,000 chocolate blocks. It took a team of 50 people, including Cargill personnel, 10 hours to temper and cast the tablet, and a further 65 hours for it to cool.

After a crane removed it from its metal mould and the record was confirmed, the celebration commenced. Afterwards the chocolate giant was cut into pieces, which were sold in Thorntons stores to raise money for the company's charity of the year, Britain's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
