First premium payments for newly certified Ghanaian farmers (06/05/2013)

A total of 3900 farmers in Ghana recently received the first certification premium from Cargill following the sale of the first crop of certified sustainable cocoa beans.

The payments which goes directly to the individual farmers, were made at a ceremony attended by our partners including the Ghana Cocoa Board, Ghana's licensed cocoa buying company Akuafo Adamfo and Solidaridad (NGO).

The farmers receiving the payments from Cargill Ghana's Managing Director have been trained through our farmer field school training programme. This was launched just a year ago in Ghana as part of the Cargill Cocoa Promise.

The payments, with more to come, are the result of a successful public private partnership working towards sustainable cocoa in Ghana, which has produced positive results for all parties, particularly the cocoa farmers.
