Improving opportunities for children in Côte d'Ivoire (06/05/2013)

Collaboration with ICI enhances child protection. We have joined forces with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) to develop farmer training to prevent the worst forms of child labour in Côte d'Ivoire.

The training module we have developed together will be delivered through our 1200 Farmer Field Schools by our training partner Anader, with approximately 60.000 farmers benefiting. To be prepared to give this training, the 420 Anader agents will follow an in depth 4 days training given by ICI.

Child labour is a complex issue: in many African communities it is common for children to help their parents on farms. Our challenge is to make sure where children are working it is safe, appropriate and should not stop them attending school.

The training itself highlights some of the issues around child labour, and comprises a dedicated manual and a series of posters to be used in Farmer Field Schools. The original materials contain illustrations featuring different phases of a farmer's life.

This work is part of the Cargill Cocoa Promise, our commitment to work together for tomorrow's cocoa by improving the livelihood of farmers and their families.
